Przedstawiona poniżej Dezyderata (łac. rzeczy pożądane) jest najsłynniejszym utworem Ehrmanna. Utwór Ehrmanna powstał w 1927 roku, a w sześć lat później (1933) autor wykorzystał go jako treść życzeń na Boże Narodzenie dla swoich przyjaciół. W 1948 roku wdowa po Ehrmannie opublikowała wiersz w tomiku The poems of Max Ehrmann. Z kolei w roku 1950 , utwór trafił do cotygodniowej gazetki parafialnej, publikowanej przez pastora episkopalnego Starego Kościoła pod wezwaniem Św. Pawła w Baltimore. W ten sposób Dezyderata przedostała się do kultury masowej. Przez długi czas po świecie krążyła pogłoska, jakoby wiersz Ehrmanna był dziełem anonimowego autora. Co więcej, powstanie utworu błędnie datowano na 1692 rok. Dlaczego tak się stało? Otóż, pierwsza strona gazetki, na której znajdował się tekst Dezyderaty, posiadała stopkę z następującą informacją: "Stary kościół św. Pawła" i datą 1692 rok. W rzeczywistości jednak była to data powstania parafii oraz budowy pierwszego kościoła. Wskutek częstego kopiowania tej jednak strony, informacja zaczęła być błędnie interpretowana przez większość osób mających styczność z utworem.
